How to Increase Productivity in Life: 5 Strategies To Try Today

Wondering how to increase productivity in life? I get it! We all have those days when our to-do lists feel like they might swallow us whole. Between managing work, home responsibilities, self-care, and personal growth, it can feel like there’s just not enough time in the day to get it all done. But what if you could boost your productivity without burning yourself out?

Let’s talk about simple, practical strategies that’ll help you feel more organized and less overwhelmed. These are my go-to productivity hacks, and they’ve helped me achieve more in less time—without sacrificing my sanity.

How to Increase Productivity in Life: 5 Simple Shifts

1. Prioritize with Purpose: The Power of the “One Thing”

How to increase productivity in life starts with figuring out what truly matters. It’s easy to fall into the trap of juggling multiple tasks at once, but trust me—multitasking is a productivity killer (I know it sounds counterintuitive, but science backs this up!). Focus on one thing at a time.

I used to be the queen of multitasking. I’d answer emails while making dinner, scroll through Pinterest while talking on the phone, and try to write blog posts while shopping for groceries on another tab… But, if I am honest about those moments, nothing was done with true excellence. It wasn’t until I started focusing on one task at a time that I began seeing real progress with getting more done in less time.

Here’s the trick: every morning, identify the top three most important tasks you need to accomplish. Whether it’s finishing a report, getting through your inbox, or even getting in a workout, make that your priority for the day.

When you are doing these things, focus on doing ONLY them, one at a time. You will notice you’ll get things done in less time, freeing up your schedule actually to cross off other things on your to-do list!

The “One Thing” approach isn’t about doing everything at once; it’s about doing the right thing well so you can effectively use your precious time!

2. Create Themes For Your Days For Maximum Focus

When your schedule is jam-packed with meetings, errands, and deadlines, it’s easy to feel like you’re running from one thing to the next without ever getting deep into anything. That’s where creating themes for your days comes in.

Theming your days means you dedicate specific days of the week to specific tasks. No more hopping between Zoom calls, grocery shopping, and random chores that don’t align with your bigger goals. Instead, you block out days to focus solely on one thing at a time.

I used to glance at my calendar and think, “Why is it filled with back-to-back meetings and to-dos that feel endless?” Once I started theming my days specifically for similar blocks of tasks, everything changed. For example, I set specific weekdays to only work on blog and email content, while other days are dedicated to editing videos, researching, and scripting.

For the first time in a long time, I finally felt like I had time to work on new projects and use my creativity in more productive ways, instead of trying to find one hour here and there to work on these tasks.

Try this: On a Sunday night, look at your week and start thinking about how to theme your days. I know this can be a bit more challenging if you work on a 9-5, so if this is your case, see how you can apply it to your personal life. Maybe Mondays are for laundry and folding, Tuesdays are for grocery shopping, Wednesday is for doing something fun with your friends and so it goes…Trust me, you’ll be amazed at how much you can accomplish when you’re not scrambling.

3. Take Your Morning Routine Seriously (They are Popular For A Reason)

Your morning sets the tone for your entire day. How you start your day can make a huge difference in your productivity levels. A solid morning routine can help you feel organized, calm, and ready to conquer anything that comes your way.

But let’s be real—I’m not suggesting you wake up at 5 a.m. and run a marathon before breakfast (unless that’s your thing, in which case…go you!). It’s about carving out just 20-30 minutes for a few simple rituals that help you center yourself.

I used to jump out of bed, groggily grab my phone, and immediately dive into emails and social media. No wonder I felt frazzled by 9 a.m. Once I made a conscious effort to create a calming morning routine—5 minutes of prayer, a quick devotional, and a healthy breakfast—I felt more grounded, focused, and energized.

If you’re not sure where to start, here are a few ideas to help build your morning routine:

  • Drink a glass of water to hydrate first thing.
  • Do a quick stretch or yoga flow to wake up your body.
  • Journal for 5 minutes to clear your mind and set intentions for the day.
  • Have a simple, energizing breakfast like a smoothie or oatmeal (skip the sugary stuff!).

Creating space in the morning for yourself sets you up for success, and you’ll feel more in control of your day.

4. Set Boundaries to Protect Your Time

Boundaries are your best friend. We live in a world where everyone wants a piece of our time—co-workers, family, friends, and, of course, social media. But if you don’t set boundaries, it’s easy to get pulled in a million directions, leaving you with zero time for the things that matter most.

In the past, I was a total yes-woman. I’d say yes to every request, every meeting, and every favor, even when it didn’t align with my goals. But eventually, I burned out. I realized that protecting my time and energy was crucial to my productivity. Now, I’ve learned to set boundaries with my time and it has been freeing!

For example, I don’t respond to work texts or emails after 6 p.m. unless urgent. If I need time to think about someone’s request, I don’t force myself to reply right away and ask for time to think about it (again, unless it’s urgent!).

At first, these adjustments felt a little weird, and I felt a little bad about not giving people what they wanted when they wanted, but after a while… I don’t ever want to go back to the way it was!

How to increase productivity in life often comes down to learning to say no. Set boundaries with the people in your life (and with yourself) to ensure you have time for deep work, self-care, and uninterrupted focus. This could mean turning off your notifications for an hour, setting office hours with your clients, or telling a friend, “I need some me-time today.”

5. Practice the 80/20 Rule: Focus on What Moves the Needle

This is one of my favorite productivity hacks—the Pareto Principle, or the 80/20 rule. The idea is simple: 80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts. So, how do you use this to increase productivity in life? Identify the tasks that have the biggest impact and focus on them.

In the past, I used to try to get everything done. I’d get caught up in little tasks that weren’t moving the needle, like organizing my email inbox for the 5th time that week (guilty!). Once I started looking at my to-do list through the lens of the 80/20 rule, I realized I was spending way too much time on low-impact tasks. Now, I prioritize the big tasks—writing blog posts, content creation, and business growth—and delegate the rest.

Action tip: At the beginning of each week, review your tasks and ask yourself: “What are the 20% of things that will give me the biggest results this week?” Focus your energy there, and let the other stuff fall to the wayside.
