It’s that sneaky little monster that creeps into our lives, whispers sweet nothings of “you can do it later,” and suddenly, our to-do lists resemble a never-ending saga. If you’re like me, you’ve probably found yourself scrolling on your phone instead of tackling that project you promised yourself you’d start weeks ago.

I once spent an entire Saturday binge-watching a new show instead of finishing a work presentation due the next day. Spoiler alert: I finished the presentation during an all-nighter on Sunday and went to work feeling absolutely awful. Has anyone else been there before?

I’ve caught myself avoiding tasks because I wanted everything to be perfect. Instead of writing, I’d spend hours searching for the “perfect” playlist to get in the zone. Spoiler alert: it didn’t help.

There are many reasons we find ourselves stuck in procrastination mode. Some of the common reasons include:

  • Fear of Failure: The thought of not doing something perfectly can be paralyzing. We might avoid starting a task to protect our self-esteem.
  • Overwhelm: When a task feels too big or complicated, it’s easy to bury our heads in the sand instead of breaking it down into manageable steps.
  • Distractions: In our digital age, it’s easier than ever to find something more enticing than our responsibilities, from social media to Netflix.

The next time you find yourself avoiding a task, take a moment to reflect. What’s going on in your head? For me, I realized I often put off tasks when I felt anxious about them. Instead of facing that anxiety, I’d dive into starting a cleaning project or scrolling through Instagram—anything but the task at hand.

Self-Assessment Tools

To gain clarity on your procrastination patterns, try keeping a journal. Write down when you procrastinate, what you were supposed to be doing, and how you felt at that moment. Over time, you may start to see patterns that reveal your specific triggers.

Pomodoro Technique

One of my favorite methods for battling procrastination is the Pomodoro Technique. It’s simple: work for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. Repeat this cycle, and after four rounds, take a longer break (15-30 minutes).

I started using this technique during my college years when I had essays piling up. I was amazed at how much I could accomplish in just 25 minutes!

Time Blocking

Another effective strategy is time blocking. This involves scheduling specific blocks of time for tasks throughout your day. I used to let my to-do list run my day, but once I started blocking out time for each task, I felt more in control and less overwhelmed.

For example, having 15-minute blocks to tidy up the house throughout the day has been an immense game changer for the chores I procrastinated on (folding laundry, anyone?).

SMART Goals

Setting SMART goals can help you stay focused and motivated. This means making your goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, instead of saying, “I want to write more,” you could say, “I will write for 30 minutes every weekday at 9 AM.” This clarity makes it easier to stay on track, and also plan for the week!

Daily/Weekly Planning

Consider using a planner or a digital tool like Trello or Asana to organize your tasks. Spend a few minutes each week mapping out your priorities and breaking larger projects into smaller, actionable steps. I personally love the satisfaction of crossing things off my to-do list; it feels like a mini victory!

Practicing Mindfulness

  • Trello: Great for visual learners, Trello uses boards and cards to help you organize tasks and projects.
  • Focus@Will: This app provides curated music to help you concentrate while you work.

Tools To Stop Procrastination: Distraction Blockers

If you find yourself easily distracted by your phone or social media, consider using apps like StayFocusd or Freedom to limit your access during work hours.

Or, you can also keep it simple like me and leave your phone in another room than the one where you are working on a task. Suddenly, I wasn’t mindlessly scrolling during work hours anymore, just because the trigger to do so wasn’t around anymore!

Creating a Supportive Environment

Your environment plays a significant role in your productivity. A cluttered workspace can lead to a cluttered mind. Take a few minutes each day to tidy up your space, so you feel more focused and ready to tackle your tasks. I make it a habit to clean my desk at the end of each day. It’s such a relief to start the next day with a fresh slate!

Sometimes, we procrastinate because we’re surrounded by distractions, whether it’s a busy household or endless notifications on our phones. Communicate your needs to your family or housemates about when you need uninterrupted time to focus on your work.
