How to Start a Gratitude Journal (And Actually Stick With It)

The idea of starting a gratitude journal sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? It feels like a beautiful act of self-care, a way to connect with yourself and focus on the positive. You might have even bought a beautiful new notebook on Amazon, and are ready to fill it with thankful, cute thoughts!
But then you sit down, open to that first blank page, and… freeze. What do I write? Do I have to do this every day? What if I’m not “good” at it?
Ugh, I feel you! BUT, before you throw your brand-new notebook out of the window, please know that, even though it may not seem like it, you’re in the right place. The secret to a life-changing gratitude practice isn’t about writing profound essays every day; it’s about building a simple, consistent habit. This is actually one of the most powerful ways to practice gratitude that we talked about in our ultimate guide.
In this simple, step-by-step guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to start a gratitude journal today… and actually stick with it! Ok, let’s do this!

Step 1: Choose a Journal (Your First Step for Gratitude Journaling as a Beginner)
The first challenge that makes most people give up on starting a gratitude practice, even before they write the first word, is choosing the “perfect” journal. So let me give you your most important piece of advice for this entire challenge: The tool does not matter as much as the practice.
You don’t need a special notebook to get started. Your first gratitude journal can be a simple spiral notebook you already own, the Notes app on your phone, or even the back of a napkin! The goal is to remove all barriers to starting, so please, feel free to use whatever is easiest for you right now.
That being said, I know that for some of us (myself included!), a beautiful, dedicated journal can make the practice feel more special and inviting. It can be a little gift to yourself that gets you excited to show up each day.
If you’re looking for a new journal to call your own, here are a few of my personal favorites that I’ve used and loved:
- My go-to journal: This journal is my go-to with a sturdy, yet beautiful, cover and high-quality, thick paper—a short, one-sentence description of why you love it.
- Heavy-weight paper for writing & sketching: I love this artistic journal because it is huge and has tons of space for writing, as well as drawing and scrapbooking around it, if that is your thing.
- Inspirational Mini-Spiral Notebook: This is a great, spiral-bound option with a beautiful design that always makes me smile. Plus, it is easy to take it anywhere!
Choose whatever is easiest and makes you the most excited right now!
Step 2: Build a Consistent Habit (Decide on Your “When and Where”)
The secret to consistency is tying your new habit to an existing one. This is a technique called “Habit Stacking” (if you are interested in the whole creating consistent habits thing, I highly recommend reading Atomic Habits, in the book, James Clear teaches this technique and many others!).
This way, instead of relying on willpower, you’ll anchor your journaling to something you already do automatically. Ok, let’s do this together!
Your Task: Choose a trigger for your new habit. This will be your time.
- Morning Person? “After I pour my morning coffee, I will write in my gratitude journal.”
- Night Owl? “After I brush my teeth at night, I will write in my gratitude journal.”
You can pick any habit you already consistently do; these are just some examples to get you thinking and looking at your day in a different light.
After that, pick a consistent place. It can be at the kitchen table, as you drink your coffee. Or in bed, right after you get in. Whatever is more organic and makes sticking to the habit doable, essentially a no-brainer to follow.
This simple routine signals to your brain that it’s time to practice gratitude, making it much easier to stay on track.
Step 3: What to Write in Your Gratitude Journal (Start with One Sentence)
This is how we overcome the “blank page” paralysis. For your first week, your only goal is to write one single sentence each day. That’s it.
This makes the practice so small and easy that you have no excuse not to do it (remember: the easiest it is to stick to, the more likely you will keep up with it!).
Simply complete this phrase:
“Today, I am grateful for…”
Maybe it’s your cozy bed, a phone call with a friend, or having your favorite meal for lunch. Just one sentence.
By starting small, you build the momentum that makes the habit stick.
Step 4: How to Go Deeper with Gratitude Journal Prompts
Once you’re comfortable with one sentence a day, you might want to add more depth. A simple framework I use to make my entries more meaningful is the “3 W’s.”
- What are you grateful for? (The specific person, thing, or event)
- Why are you grateful for it? (The feeling or reason behind it)
- What good did it bring to your life? (The positive impact)
Here’s what it looks like in practice:
- Before: “I’m grateful for my friend.”
- After (using the 3 W’s): “I’m grateful for my friend, Christina (What). We went on a coffee date today (Why), and it completely turned my stressful afternoon around and reminded me how blessed I am to have her in my life (What good).”
See how it can help you look deeper and take this whole gratitude practice to another level? Seriously, these feel like magic sometimes!

Troubleshooting: What If I Miss a Day? (A Note on Consistency)
Yep, you will miss a day. Life happens, it’s inevitable!
But take a deep breath, have grace with yourself and remember: The goal is not perfection. The goal is to never miss twice.
If you forget on Tuesday, just make sure you write your one sentence on Wednesday. No guilt allowed. This is a practice of self-love, not self-criticism.
Your Journey to a More Grateful Life Starts Now

And that’s it! That is the entire step-by-step to starting a gratitude journal (and actually sticking with it!).
Again, keep in mind: It’s not about finding the perfect, expensive notebook or writing poetic essays every night. It’s simply about choosing a tool, picking a time, and starting with just one single sentence.
This small, 5-minute daily habit is one of the most powerful tools you have on your journey of creating a life that you love. It’s a quiet conversation with yourself that, over time, will rewire your brain to see the good, build your resilience, and unlock a deeper sense of joy in your everyday life. You have everything you need to begin!
So… What if we put it into practice right now?
