Feeling Overwhelmed and Exhausted? Try This One Small Shift

Pinterest Pin: Overwhelmed and Exhausted? Read this before you spiral into guilt again.

Have you ever had one of those mornings where you wake up with grand intentions—today’s the day you finally get your life together!—only to find yourself under a blanket two hours later, staring at a never-ending to-do list and wondering if it’s too soon to take a nap? You are just too overwhelmed and exhausted to function.

Yeah. Me too.

If you’re nodding along, let me just say this loud and clear: you’re not lazy. You’re just tired, my love. And that matters. Let’s unpack that together.

(Want to see how this plays out in real life? Watch the video that inspired this post right here.)

Feeling Overwhelmed and Exhausted: Does This Sound Familiar?

It usually starts with a pep talk.

You psych yourself up:
“Today is the day. I’ll go to yoga, grocery shop, reply to all my emails, organize the kitchen, be a glowing dinner guest and wash my hair.”

But by 10am, you’re frozen. Staring at your planner. Brain fog thicker than your conditioner. And suddenly, all that hope collapses into… guilt.

You start whispering things to yourself you’d never say to a friend:

  • “What’s wrong with me?”
  • “Everyone else can handle this.”
  • “Why can’t I just get it together?”

Why We Confuse Overwhelm and Exhaustion with Laziness

Here’s the truth: most of us were raised in a culture that worships hustle and shames rest.

From a young age, we learned to associate doing with worth. If you weren’t achieving, producing, or showing up with energy and enthusiasm, you were seen as… falling behind.

So when your body asks for rest, your brain freaks out. Instead of honoring your need for a break, it labels you: lazy, unmotivated, weak.

But laziness implies a lack of desire. And if you’re reading this post? You clearly care. You want to grow. You’re just tired. And that’s not a flaw. That’s a flag. One that says: pause here.

What If It’s Not Laziness—But Too Much on Your Plate?

Sometimes we’re not procrastinating—we’re overwhelmed and exhausted.

  • Our bodies are sending signals: Please, slow down.
  • Our minds are asking for kindness, not more pressure.

So let’s stop trying to live like there are four of us. You are one person. A beautiful, limited, glorious one-person show.

And that’s more than enough.

A Personal Note: When I Hit My Limit Feeling Overwhelmed and Exhausted

I’ll be honest with you—there was a week recently when I had three deadlines, a fridge full of ingredients I had planned to cook, and a planner covered in color-coded boxes. It looked like I was nailing it.

Except I wasn’t. I hadn’t slept well. I was emotionally depleted. And I found myself sitting on the kitchen floor, crying over a pile of laundry that “should’ve” been folded days ago.

In that moment, I realized something: my life didn’t need more organization. It needed more grace.

So I crossed off every single thing on my to-do list… and rewrote it with only three items:

  • Shower
  • Eat something warm
  • Go for a short walk

That was it. And you know what? That one small reset made me feel more human than any “productive” day ever had.

The Power of a Smaller List (and a Bigger Heart)

Try this: Instead of writing a mile-long list of everything you think you should do today, pick one small, doable thing that actually feels nourishing.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Take a long shower and light a candle afterwards.
  • Make yourself your favorite childhood snack.
  • Sit in the sun for 10 minutes.
  • Listen to a podcast that makes you laugh.
  • Text someone you love with a silly emoji.

These aren’t throwaway tasks. They’re acts of healing. You’re not just crossing things off a list—you’re coming back to yourself.

How To Reset Your Day in 10 Minutes or Less

If you’re spiraling, try this gentle reset ritual:

  1. Breathe in for 4 counts. Out for 6.
Do this five times. Let your shoulders drop. Let your jaw unclench.
  2. Name what you need.
Do you need food? Silence? Comfort? Sunshine?
  3. Do one nurturing thing.
Not ten. Just one. Make tea. Change clothes. Open a window.
  4. Speak gently to yourself.
Say: “I’m allowed to move slower today. My worth is not in my speed.”

This is not about abandoning your life. It’s about coming back to it softly.

Gentle Productivity Is Still Progress (Especially When Overwhelmed and Exhausted)

On the day Bianca (from the video!) planned to “do it all,” she ended up doing just one thing: washing her hair.

But she did it with care. She breathed deeply. She rested. And here’s the thing: she didn’t do everything—but she took care of herself. And that counts.

More than counts—it’s everything.

The next time you spiral feeling overwhelmed and exhausted, say this:

“I am not behind. I am allowed to need rest.
My body is not a machine. My mind is not a failure.
I can do one good thing today. And that is enough.”

Say it out loud. Whisper it in the mirror. Save it as your phone wallpaper if you need to.

Because sometimes, being kind to yourself is the most radical thing you can do.

If All You Do Today Is Breathe Deeply… That’s Enough

Pinterest Pin: You're not lazy, you're just tired. A killer soft reset guide that changed my life forever.

So if today’s not the day you become a productivity queen, that’s okay. Maybe today is the day you remember that you’re human. That you’re worthy even when your to-do list stays untouched.

Breathe deep. Be kind. Do one good thing for yourself. And then, thank yourself for showing up at all.

Because honestly? That’s already a lot.
