Wondering how to discover your authentic self? I love that for you! Because, let’s be real—“being yourself” sounds cute until you realize you’ve spent years shapeshifting into someone else to be liked, accepted, or just… not rejected. If you’ve ever found yourself playing the role of “Miss Perfect,” always trying to be what others expect, you’re not alone. I’ve been there too—more than once, actually.

This post isn’t a fluffy pep talk. It’s a wake-up call (with love). After over a decade of self-discovery work—including therapy, breakdowns, breakthroughs, and a lot of unlearning—I’ve pulled together five powerful steps that helped me stop performing and start showing up as my real self.

And friend, when I tell you that everything changed after step three? Whew. Buckle up.

How To Discover Your Authentic Self In 5 Steps

Step 1: What If No One Else Was Watching?

Let’s start with a question that might just shift everything: What would you do if no one else was watching?

I’m serious. What would you wear, read, listen to, or care about if zero people were judging?

For me, it took a humbling memory from 2010 to realize how deep I was in performance mode. Picture teen-me, crafting a list of “cool girl” traits so I could attract my dream boyfriend. He had to love music, cinema, and indie bands—so naturally, I became the girl who watched foreign films she didn’t even like and wore band tees to seem edgy. All the while, my actual soul just wanted to twirl around in pretty dresses and sing High School Musical songs at the top of my lungs.

I had completely abandoned my own taste to become someone else’s fantasy.

So here’s your first challenge on how to discover your authentic self:
Sit with this prompt today—What do I actually like? If no one else was watching, what would I choose?

And if you genuinely don’t know? Start exploring. Watch something new. Read something random. Try a hobby you’d usually scroll past. And after each one, ask: Does this feel like me?

That’s where your real self begins to peek through.

Step 2: Nourish Yourself (Like, Actually)

When you’re discovering your true self, you’re not just flipping a switch. You’re raising a whole new version of you—and dear, she needs care.

During what I lovingly call my “monk phase” in 2014, I cut distractions and focused inward. That’s when I found out I loved long runs, dad jokes, and letting my hair grow out. I wasn’t curating myself anymore—I was uncovering myself.

So here’s your second challenge on how to discover your authentic self:
Take 30 minutes this week to be alone with your own energy.


Read, walk, sit in silence—whatever feels nourishing. This time is about you, for you. You can’t meet your real self if you never slow down long enough to listen to her.

Step 3: The World Won’t End If You Let People Down

Okay, deep breath.

Here’s the truth that shook me:
The world will not collapse if you disappoint someone.

I used to think setting boundaries meant being selfish—or worse, unloved. But when I finally started saying “no,” something wild happened: the people who truly cared… stayed. The ones who didn’t? Drifted. And it hurt, but it also cleared space for better.

This is your next challenge on how to discover your authentic self:
Say no to something that doesn’t align with who you are this week.


Watch what happens. Feel the discomfort—but also feel the freedom.

Step 4: Not Everyone Is Gonna Like You (And That’s a Good Thing)

This one used to keep me up at night. I needed people to like me. But the more I showed up as myself, the more I realized: You cannot be everyone’s cup of tea without losing yourself.

Think of yourself like caramel cheddar popcorn (yes, I said what I said). Some people love it. Others think it’s weird. But the ones who love it? They really love it (and yep, I am one of the people absolutely obsessed with this weirdly delicious combination!)

When I stopped chasing approval, I started attracting people who genuinely vibed with the real me—and that was way more fulfilling than being “liked” for a version I didn’t even enjoy being.

Your challenge here:
Identify one situation where you’ve been twisting yourself into a pretzel to be liked. Then… untwist. Let it go. Say what you really think, or simply step back.

Like Jamie Kern Lima says in her book Worthy:

“You weren’t rejected, I hid your value from them, because they are not assigned to your destiny.”

Let. That. Marinate.

Step 5: Stay Open to Change

Here’s the final (and lifelong) step:
You are allowed to evolve. You are supposed to evolve.

You’re not meant to be a fixed version of yourself. You’re meant to grow, shift, bloom, even surprise yourself.

Case in point? I used to mock fantasy movies… until I watched Harry Potter last year and found out I’m a Hufflepuff. (And I am OBSESSED now.) That small shift opened up a whole new side of me I never knew I’d enjoy. Being open led me there.

Say yes to something new this week. Try the unexpected. Be surprised by what you love.

You’re not a final product—you’re a masterpiece in progress. And every new version of you brings you closer to the real thing.
