New Year Reset Checklist: A Gentle Way to Start Fresh (No Resolutions Required)
There is something about January that nobody puts on a vision board. Let me know if this sounds familiar…
It’s the last week of December. The tree is still up, the fridge is full of leftovers, and your phone keeps showing you women who already have their 2027 planners color-coded. Meanwhile you’re on the couch in yesterday’s sweatpants, wondering how another year went by so fast.
If that’s you right now, take a deep breath. I get it. I’ve started over more times than I can count, and some of those “new me” Januarys lasted exactly four days. (Hello, gym membership I never used!)
Here’s what finally changed it for me: I stopped writing resolutions and started doing a reset. A resolution asks you to become a different person by Monday. A reset asks you to look at your life with kind eyes, clear a little space, and pick a few tiny things that will actually make next year feel better.
So that’s what this New Year reset checklist is: a gentle, step-by-step way to close this year and set up the next one, without the pressure, the guilt or the 5am wake-up calls.
And if you’re reading this in the middle of a hard season (a new baby, a breakup, a move, a job that’s draining you)? You don’t have to do all of it. Pick one section. Save the rest for later. No guilt allowed over here.

Reset vs. Resolutions: Why This Works Better
Most resolutions fail for a very simple reason, and it’s not that you’re lazy. So let me start with a truth we’re long overdue for: you’re (most likely) not lazy, you’re tired. A tired woman can’t “discipline” her way out of exhaustion, and January is usually when we have the least energy of the whole year (the holidays are fun, but they can drain ya!).
A reset is different because:
- It starts with looking back, not jumping ahead. You can’t plan a route without knowing where you are right now.
- It clears space before adding anything. Less clutter, fewer commitments, more breathing room.
- It sets up systems, not willpower. A charged phone, a clean nightstand, a calendar that makes sense. Boring? Maybe. Life-changing? Totally.
- It ends with tiny shifts. One word, one habit, one priority. That’s it.
If you’ve done my 7-day life reset challenge, you’ll recognize the spirit of this one. Think of today’s checklist as the seasonal, cozy, end-of-year version.
When Should You Do Your New Year Reset?
Anytime between December 26 and the second week of January is perfect. That “in-between” week after Christmas is my favorite (nobody knows what day it is anyway, right?).
You can do the whole checklist in one cozy afternoon, or spread it over a week with one section a day. And if you find this post in March? It still works. January is not a deadline, it’s just a nice excuse.
Your New Year Reset Checklist (Step by Step)
The checklist has four parts: Look Back, Let Go, Set Up and Look Forward. Grab a cup of tea, a notebook and a cozy blanket. Let’s do this!
Part 1: Look Back (Close This Year With Grace)
Before you plan anything, give this year a proper goodbye. Even the messy parts. Especially the messy parts.
- ☐ Write down 10 things that happened this year, big or small. A trip, a new job, a hard conversation, the first time you said no.
- ☐ Name your three proudest moments. Surviving counts. Truly.
- ☐ Name what was hard, without judging yourself for it.
- ☐ Ask: what drained me and what filled me up? People, habits, places, apps (yep, looking at you, midnight TikTok scroll).
- ☐ Write a short thank-you note to this year’s version of you. She did a lot.
Your action: Set a timer for 20 minutes and answer these in your journal. If you want more questions, my life audit guide goes deeper, and these gratitude journal prompts are lovely for this step.
Part 2: Let Go (Make Room for the New)
Okay, now we clear a liiittle space. Not a full Marie Kondo weekend, just enough so your brain stops feeling like a browser with 107 tabs open.
- ☐ Do a 15-minute “one drawer” declutter. The nightstand, the junk drawer or your bathroom counter. One spot is enough.
- ☐ Clean up your phone: delete 10 apps you don’t use, unfollow accounts that make you feel behind, and turn off notifications you don’t need.
- ☐ Unsubscribe from 10 emails (sorry not sorry to the stores you only signed up for to get a discount code you forgot to use).
- ☐ Write down one habit or commitment you’re ready to release. Maybe it’s a weekly obligation that no longer fits, or saying yes when you mean no.
- ☐ Brain dump everything on your mind onto one page. Every to-do, worry and idea. Then circle only the three that truly matter.
Your action: Pick ONE item from this list and do it today. Just one. Momentum loves small wins.
If your mind feels extra full right now, keep my emergency mental reset checklist close. It’s made for those days.
Part 3: Set Up (Make January Easier for Future You)
This is the part nobody talks about, and it’s my favorite. Present You is setting up the stage so Future You doesn’t have to rely on motivation.
- ☐ Reset your calendar: add birthdays, appointments, bill dates and (my fav!) a few dates with yourself.
- ☐ Do a five-minute money check: list your subscriptions and cancel one you don’t use anymore.
- ☐ Set up a cozy evening corner: a book, a candle, a soft blanket. Something that makes winter nights feel like a treat.
- ☐ Pick a “default” bedtime that’s realistic for your season right now. Not 8pm because a girl on Instagram said so. Your bedtime.
- ☐ Prepare one thing for the first week of January: groceries, a simple meal plan, or your outfit for the first workday.
Your action: Choose one evening this week for a “reset night”: clean sheets, a warm bath, an early night. Romanticize it!
Part 4: Look Forward (Gently)
Now, and only now, we dream a little. Notice I said a little. We’re starting small. Like, one-word small.
- ☐ Choose your word of the year. One word for how you want next year to feel: calm, brave, home, bloom, enough.
- ☐ Write three things you want MORE of and three you want LESS of.
- ☐ Pick one tiny habit you can do even on your worst day. Five minutes of stretching. One sentence in a journal. Drinking a glass of water before coffee.
- ☐ Write a letter to yourself to open on December 31, 2027. Trust me, Future You will love it.
- ☐ Make a mini vision board on Pinterest or on paper. My vision board guide walks you through it.
Your action: Write your word of the year on a sticky note and put it somewhere you’ll see every morning, like your mirror or your coffee machine.

The Quick Version (For Tired Women)
Had a long year? Same here. Becoming a mom this year turned everything I thought I knew about routines upside down, so I made a five-minute version too. If all you do is this list, that’s a reset, and that’s OKAY!
- Write three things you’re proud of from this year.
- Write one thing you’re letting go of.
- Clean one small space.
- Pick your word of the year.
- Choose one tiny habit for January.
Done! Yay, you!!
What If January Comes and I Don’t Feel “Reset”?
Totally normal. A few honest truths from someone who’s been there:
- You don’t need to feel motivated to begin. Motivation usually shows up after you start, not before.
- If you miss a day of your new habit, that’s part of it. The goal is never to miss twice.
- If you’re in a survival season, the reset is rest. Sleep, simple meals, and asking for help count as personal development too.
- If the checklist feels like too much, do Part 1 only. Looking back with kindness is already a big shift.
Your New Year Starts With One Small Step
Remember: a new year isn’t a test you can fail. It’s just a fresh page, and you get to write on it at your own pace.
You don’t need a whole new you. You need a little space, a little grace, and one tiny step in the direction you want to go. You’ve got this!!
Now tell me in the comments: what’s your word of the year going to be? I’d love to cheer you on! And pin this checklist for later so it’s ready when that in-between week arrives.
If you want me to walk with you for longer than one afternoon, my 21-Day Self-Discovery Plan takes you through a full reset, one small step a day.
Wishing you all the love,
Isabelle
