What is a soft lifestyle?
There is a lot of buzz around what a soft lifestyle actually means, but at its core, living a soft life is about three things:
- Being intentional about daily life: Intentionality and mindfulness are a central part of the soft life. Things like being present in the moment, appreciating the little things, and cultivating gratitude for what you already have.
- Expanding on the meaning of self-care: A soft lifestyle emphasizes the importance of nurturing oneself and taking time to recharge. This mindset expands what self-care can look like, embracing it in all its forms—physical, emotional, and mental.
- Prioritizing balance and harmony: Unlike hustle culture, a soft life values balance and harmony. It’s all about finding steadiness in all aspects of life, from work to relationships to social life and hobbies.
Soft Live vs Hard Life
Quality over quantity
In a soft life, quality is more important than quantity. Instead of seeing “being busy” as a badge of honor, the focus is shifted to meaningful experiences and connections.
In a soft life mindset, you are very intentional about how you invest your time. This will inform decisions about all aspects of life, from where you work to where you live, who you have around, and even where to spend your vacations and money.
Consistency over intensity
A soft lifestyle also offers a gentler pace that is way more sustainable in the long haul. It’s about enjoying the journey instead of rushing to reach the destination.
This can mean waking up at 7 AM instead of 4:30 AM or going to the gym three times a week instead of every day.
Grace over shame
A hard lifestyle might be accompanied by self-criticism and a relentless need to “prove yourself.” On the other hand, a soft life is grounded in self-compassion and acceptance.
This doesn’t mean you strive to grow and improve—because you do! But instead of doing these things from a place of self-hatred, you start living and growing from a place of kindness to yourself, knowing you are already loved and capable of anything you set your mind to.
You don’t need to achieve any goal to become deserving of love; you already are… just as you are.
A 3-Step Soft Life Night Routine for Beginners
Now that you learned a little bit more about what soft life is all about, let’s dive into a simple and 3-step soft life night routine that you can start incorporating into your evenings to help you start integrating the concepts of a soft lifestyle into your everyday life.
Step One: Disconnect & Chill
At least an hour before bed, disconnect from the phone and TV. Instead of the nightly doom scroll, think about engaging in calming activities such as reading a book, journaling, or stretching. Use this time to unwind and release the tension of the day.
A few ideas on how to disconnect and chill for your soft life night routine
- Kindle Paperwhite: This is one of my favorite e-readers because it allows you to enjoy your favorite books without the distractions of a tablet or smartphone. It also has a glare-free display that reads like actual paper.
- Aromatherapy Balm: Can you imagine an essential oil that is not messy that you can bring anywhere and get all its benefits without having a diffuser? That’s what these portable aromatherapy balms are all about! Infused with essential oils to promote relaxation and ease stress, just apply it to your pulse around 30 minutes before bedtime and feel the magic.
- Yoga Mat: Investing in a high-quality yoga mat is one of the best ways to elevate your at-home practice! Look for one with extra cushioning and a non-slip surface for extra stretching comfort and stability.
Step Two: Cultivate a Grateful Reflection
Now, take a few moments to reflect on your day. Think about all you’ve accomplished, no matter how small, and express your gratitude for all the good things in your life. A great way to stay consistent with this practice is by keeping a gratitude journal, where you can write down three things you’re grateful for each night, for example.
A few ideas on how to cultivate grateful reflection for your soft life night routine
- The Five Minute Journal: This is hyped for a reason! This famous guided journal prompts you to reflect on gratitude, affirmations, and intentions for each day. Its simple structure makes it easy to incorporate a gratitude practice into your routine.
- A Classic Moleskine: We love a classic! This Moleskine notebook is perfect for writing your thoughts, reflections, and gratitude list. It’s also easy to carry with you wherever you go.
- Gratitude Stone Set: This might be for you if you are a crystal person! Having a set of gratitude stones by your bedside table can be a tangible reminder to pause and express gratitude each night. You can do that by holding a stone in your hand and reflecting on something you’re thankful for.
Step Three: Prepare For Restorative Sleep
Creating a soothing bedtime ritual signals to your body and mind that it’s time to wind down—so that’s what we will do! It can be as simple as taking a warm bath, using relaxation tools like deep breathing, or listening to a guided meditation. Ensure that your sleep environment gives your body the same “slowing down” cues by dimming the lights, setting a comfortable temperature, and minimizing noise.
A few ideas on how to prepare for restorative sleep for your soft life night routine
- Epsom Salt Bath Soak: Epsom salt bath soaks are known for their muscle-relaxing and stress-relieving properties. You can add a few drops of lavender essential oil to make them even more soothing.
- Vanilla & Lavender Beeswax Candle: This non-toxic candle is the perfect way to set a relaxing atmosphere in the bedroom. Their scent pairs lavender with jasmine and coconut water, helping with insomnia relief.
- Sleep Mask: The right sleep mask can block out light and help your body prepare for deeper sleep. Look for one made from soft, breathable materials for maximum comfort (this is my favorite!).
Once you incorporate these simple yet powerful practices into your nighttime routine, you will be able to start cultivating a softer, more nourishing lifestyle.
Please remember that the journey to a soft life is about progress, not perfection. It will take some time until we unlearn the ways of hustle culture, so be patient with yourself as you embrace this new way of being.
How do you feel about the soft lifestyle? Do you consider yourself more “soft life” or “hard life”?
