How To Start A Night Routine
The first step to creating an effective night routine is to define your expectations and needs.
What do you hope to get by establishing a nightly ritual? Is your goal to improve sleep quality, reduce stress, or boost productivity for the next day?
When you clearly outline your goals, you can tailor your routine to meet your specific needs–Avoiding that mistake of saving a sleep schedule you saw on Pinterest to end up feeling frustrated because it didn’t give you what you were looking for! I know I’ve been there before…
To help you get started on creating a personalized night routine, consider the following questions:
- What are your current sleep patterns? Track your sleep for a week to identify consistent patterns, such as when you fall asleep and wake up.
- How do you feel when you wake up? Are you refreshed and energized, or do you struggle to get out of bed?
- What are your energy levels throughout the day? Do you experience energy crashes in the afternoon or evening
- What factors contribute to your mood swings, stress, or anxiety? By identifying these triggers, you can effectively incorporate stress-reducing activities into your routine that specifically target them.
Understanding your sleep patterns, energy levels, and stress factors can help you create a night routine that addresses your unique needs.
Consistency is key, so start with small, achievable steps and gradually build upon your routine over time. Speaking of small steps… let’s discuss our action plan here!
What Should Be Your Night Routine?
Based on your answers to the questions about your sleep patterns, energy levels, and stress factors, your night routine can start to take shape!
Since we’re focusing on a productive night routine that sets the stage for a successful day, we’ll outline a five-step sleep routine designed to boost productivity by promoting relaxation and rest.
Remember, this is a general framework. As I just shared, your needs are unique! So please feel free to adapt these steps to fit your goals and preferences.
The idea is to create a personalized routine that helps you unwind, recharge, and prepare for a productive day ahead.
Enough talk, let’s dive into the five steps!
Step One: Create Your Calm Corner
Let’s start by transforming your bedroom into a sanctuary for good sleep! Here’s how you can do that:
Screens Off, Melatonin On
Studies suggest that blue light emitted from electronic devices disrupts melatonin production, a sleep hormone. Melatonin is crucial for regulating sleep-wake cycles. To optimize melatonin production, dim the lights in your bedroom at least an hour before bedtime.
Swap screen time for calming scents like lavender, known for its stress-reducing properties. Lavender aromatherapy can promote relaxation and improve sleep quality. Candles and oil diffusers might help you with that. (These are my favorite lavender candle and aromatherapy oil for night routines.)
The Ultimate Cozy Shower Routine
You can also go total self-care and indulge in a warm bath or shower to lower your body temperature. The National Sleep Foundation recommends creating a bedtime routine that signals your body it’s time for sleep.
A warm bath or shower can act as a cue, promoting relaxation and preparing your body for sleep.
Pair up your bath or shower with a calming playlist, followed by a good skincare routine and some comfy PJs, and you just took your night routine to the next level!
This first step is so essential because to be in a healthy productivity state, you need to prioritize time for yourself.
When you create those moments where you intentionally put yourself in a relaxed and calm state, you align your energy with wholeness and overflow.
When you feel grounded, you don’t rush or compare. You can focus on the tasks and challenges in front of you with the perspective that you need to be. And this is where the magic starts!
Step Two: Reflect and Reset
Now, let’s take a moment to appreciate your accomplishments. A study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology learned that focusing on positive experiences boosts self-esteem and optimism. So use that to your advantage!
Focusing on Self-Appreciation & Gratitude
Reflecting on your wins can cultivate a sense of gratitude and satisfaction, promoting better sleep.
So, let’s do a simple contemplation exercise to help you analyze and celebrate your strengths and start building a deeper sense of self-confidence.
Think about your last 24 hours and write down at least one thing that went well and how you were responsible for making that happen.
For example:
- Waking up earlier to work out went well because I didn’t hit the alarm’s snooze button and stayed committed to my plan.
- The work presentation was excellent because I focused on researching and brainstorming the best strategies beforehand with the team.
- My date was awesome because I opened myself up to listening to the other person, asking honest, legitimate questions, and sharing little bits about myself.
This moment of self-reflection will help you look at your next day and feel more confident in your abilities to make things happen and overcome any obstacles that may come your way!
Step Three: Future-Proof Your Morning & Day
Set yourself up for a smooth and productive tomorrow, morning routine included!
Creating a Foolproof To-Do List For The Next Day
Do you want to know one of my best-kept secrets about what made me become wildly productive? I started doing less, and now I want to invite you to do less, too!
Instead of cramming 27 different tasks into your to-do list, focus on three to five main chores and assign a priority to one thing that, when completed, will already make your day worth it.
I’m asking you to limit your to-do list points so you don’t wake up feeling overwhelmed. Start with a small number and add up the tasks once you complete them.
I know this may sound counterintuitive, but stay with me here because there is some science behind this decision! Studies suggest that task management reduces stress and improves focus. Creating a to-do list makes you declutter your mind and free up space for better sleep.
Setting Yourself For The Perfect Morning Routine
After that, it’s time for this simple (yet powerful) visualization exercise to prepare your brain to follow through on whatever morning routine you decide to have!
Close your eyes and imagine your perfect morning routine for the next day, whatever that may look like. Imagine yourself waking up feeling refreshed, tackling your tasks with ease.
Research from Harvard University indicates that visualization strengthens neural pathways, priming your brain for success so that this mental rehearsal can set the tone for a productive day!

Optimizing Your Time For The Next Morning
Now that you have your game plan for the next day, it’s time to organize your surroundings.
This will help your future self have everything it needs to succeed and be productive. It will also prevent you from having decision fatigue first thing in the morning (which can lower your ability to make good choices)!
Start thinking about everything you can prepare tonight to make your morning easier. A few examples are:
- Choose your next-day outfit and leave it folded next to your bed.
- Get your bag/backpack/purse ready with everything you will need
- Leave your breakfast pre-ready (overnight oats, anyone?) or put the ingredients you will use already on the counter (eggs, oatmeal, fruits for your smoothie, for example)
- Set up your alarm
By prepping your outfit, packing your bag, and preparing breakfast the night before, you eliminate these morning decisions, saving time and reducing stress.
Step Four: Cultivate Calm
Connect with something larger than yourself before drifting off to sleep. A reminder that you’re not alone in this world will make sure you go to bed with a grateful heart.
Bringing Mindfulness To Your Night Routine
A study by the University of California reported that mindfulness practices like meditation can reduce stress and anxiety, promoting better sleep quality. Mindfulness meditation can quieten your mind and prepare your body for sleep.
You can practice meditation, prayer, gratitude, or journaling, which can also cultivate a sense of peace and well-being. Here are a few of my favorite resources to get you started. Pick one, or mix and match according to what you need right now:

Step Five: Unwind With A Book
Now that you have the next morning nailed down and feel extra relaxed, it’s time to fill your subconscious with good stuff to work with during your sleep. Reading is one of the most fun ways to do that!
Finding Your Perfect Bedtime Read
You can choose a lighthearted novel or a poetry collection to relax your mind. Alternatively, you can delve into a self-development book or something related to your work.
Reading before bed will not only help you slow down, but it will also make it easier for your brain to retain the information since it’s the last thing you are getting in contact with. A few minutes later, your subconscious will work on consolidating the day’s learning.

Starting Your Night Routine & Sweet Dreams to Success
Starting a new habit can be challenging, but with consistency and determination, you can transform your nights into your takeoff point for success. Here are a few actionable steps to get you started:
Start Small
It’s ok if you don’t add all of these things all at once! Begin by incorporating one or two new habits into your routine. Focus on consistency rather than perfection.
Create a Relaxing Environment
Dedicate a specific space for your nightly rituals. This place could be your bedroom, a cozy corner, or a designated relaxation area.
Set Realistic Goals For Your Night Routine
As we talked about in the beginning, determine what you want to achieve with your night routine. Set clear and attainable goals, whether it’s improving sleep quality, reducing stress, or boosting productivity.
Track Your Night Routine Progress
If you want to go the extra mile, keep a journal to monitor your nightly activities and how they impact your sleep and overall well-being. This journaling track will help you identify what works best for you.
Be Patient, Have Grace With Yourself

Building a new habit takes time. Don’t get discouraged if you experience setbacks. Celebrate small victories and stay committed to your goals.
Remember, consistency is key. Even small steps can make a significant difference in your overall well-being. You’re investing in your long-term health and happiness by prioritizing self-care and establishing a relaxing night routine.
