How To Find Yourself? Do This One Thing First

The short answer to “how to find yourself” is often sought with the expectation of a quick fix. But the truth is, as I’ve shared in our introduction, self-discovery is a journey, not a destination. It’s a path filled with unexpected turns, moments of clarity, and even periods of confusion.

Before diving into the specifics, it’s essential to understand one fundamental truth: finding yourself is a process, not a project with a deadline.

The most important step is to extend yourself grace and patience.

  • It’s okay if you don’t have all the answers right now.
  • It’s okay if the journey gets messy.

The key is to embrace the process without judgment. This self-compassion will be your guiding light as you navigate the complexities of self-discovery.

Remember, there’s no rush. Your journey is unique, and your timeline is entirely your own. Starting with kindness towards yourself sets the stage for a meaningful and rewarding exploration of your true identity.

After we finish going through each of the 20 steps to finding yourself, I will share some of my favorite resources for overcoming obstacles and keeping yourself going even through the challenging moments of this journey. So stay tuned!

For now, let’s talk about how to get started on finding yourself.

How To Find Yourself: 20 Steps To Get Started

To help you make the best of your self-discovery journey, I’ve decided to divide these twenty steps into four different stages:

  • Stage One: Understanding Yourself
  • Stage Two: Exploring Your Passions
  • Stage Three: Building Connections
  • Stage Four: Taking Action

Each of these stages builds on the previous one, so please follow the order for the best results. None of them have a specific number of days or weeks you should spend working on each. Take one stage and step at a time, investing as much time as necessary for you to feel confident enough to take the next step. Let’s get this party started!

Understanding Yourself

1. Mindfulness and Meditation

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment without judgment. Meditation is a technique for achieving this state. Studies show that mindfulness reduces stress, anxiety, and depression and improves focus, memory, and emotional regulation.

Actionable Steps:

  • Start with short meditation sessions, focusing on your breath.
  • Gradually increase duration.
  • Incorporate mindfulness into daily activities. Apps like Headspace and Calm can help you get things started.

2. Journaling

Writing down thoughts and feelings can provide valuable insights into your inner world. Studies show that expressive writing can reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance problem-solving abilities.

Actionable Steps: Choose a dedicated journal. Write regularly, even if it’s just a few sentences. Experiment with different journaling prompts (I will be sharing some of my favorite resources, including guided journal prompts, later).

3. Personality Assessments

Personality assessments can offer a framework for understanding one’s strengths, weaknesses, and preferences. Psychology and career counseling use them to understand patients and candidates better.

Actionable Steps: Research different assessments (Myers-Briggs, Enneagram, Big Five) to find the best fit. But remember to take assessments with a grain of salt and use them as general guidance instead of indisputable truth.

4. Values Clarification

Identifying your core values helps align your actions with what truly matters to you. Research suggests that living in alignment with values increases life satisfaction and well-being.

Actionable Steps:

  • Create a list of values.
  • Reflect on past decisions to identify underlying values.
  • Incorporate values into goal setting.

5. Self-Compassion

Treating yourself with kindness and understanding is crucial for personal growth. Self-compassion is linked to reduced stress, anxiety, depression, and increased resilience.

Actionable Steps:

  • Practice self-compassionate language.
  • Challenge negative self-talk.
  • Celebrate small victories.

Exploring Your Passions

6. Try New Things

Stepping outside your comfort zone can lead to unexpected discoveries. Novelty stimulates the brain, promoting creativity and problem-solving. New experiences can lead to personal growth and increased life satisfaction.

Actionable Steps:

  • Make a list of activities you’ve always wanted to try.
  • Join a club or take a class.
  • Attend local events and festivals.

7. Identify Your Strengths

Understanding your strengths can help you leverage your talents and build confidence. Positive psychology research highlights the importance of strengths-based development for overall well-being.

Actionable Steps: Take a strengths assessment or ask trusted friends and family for feedback. Focus on developing your top strengths.

8. Explore Your Interests

Delving deeper into your passions can lead to a more fulfilling life. Engaging in enjoyable activities increases happiness, reduces stress, and improves overall life satisfaction.

Actionable Steps:

  • Set aside dedicated time for your hobbies.
  • Join online communities or attend events related to your interests.
  • Consider, in the future, turning a hobby into a side hustle.

9. Volunteer

Giving back to the community can provide a sense of purpose and connection. Research shows that volunteering can increase happiness, reduce stress, and improve well-being.

Actionable Steps:

  • Find a cause you care about.
  • Start small, even offering a few hours a month.
  • Look for volunteer opportunities that match your skills and interests.

10. Travel

Experiencing different cultures can broaden your perspective and spark new ideas. Can you believe that travel is actually linked to increased creativity? How fun is that?

Actionable Steps:

  • Save money and plan ahead.
  • Choose destinations that align with your interests and budget.
  • Immerse yourself in the local culture.

Building Connections

11. Cultivate Meaningful Relationships

Strong social connections contribute to overall well-being and happiness. Research consistently shows that strong social relationships are linked to increased happiness, better health, and longevity.

Actionable Steps:

  • Prioritize quality time with loved ones.
  • Practice active listening and empathy.
  • Join social groups or clubs based on shared interests.

12. Effective Communication

Clear and open communication is essential for building strong relationships. Effective communication skills have been shown to improve relationships, reduce conflict, and increase job satisfaction.

Actionable Steps: Practice active listening. Express feelings using “I” statements–for example, “I feel frustrated when I come home and the dishes are still dirty.” Avoid blame and defensiveness.

13. Empathy and Perspective-Taking

Understanding others’ perspectives can help you build stronger connections and resolve conflicts. Empathy has been linked to increased compassion, cooperation, and overall well-being.

Actionable Steps:

  • Practice putting yourself in someone else’s shoes.
  • Avoid making assumptions.
  • Seek to understand before being understood.

14. Set Boundaries

Establishing boundaries helps protect your time, energy, and emotional well-being. It can also reduce stress, improve relationships, and increase self-esteem.

Actionable Steps: Identify your personal boundaries. Communicate your boundaries clearly and assertively—practice saying no.

15. Practice Active Listening

Giving full attention to others shows respect and builds trust. Active listening improves communication, strengthens relationships, and reduces misunderstandings.

Actionable Steps: Maintain eye contact, avoid distractions, and paraphrase what the other person is saying to show understanding.

Taking Action

16. Goal Setting

Setting clear and achievable goals provides direction and motivation. Goal setting has been shown to increase motivation, focus, and performance.

Actionable Steps:

  • Use the SMART goal framework (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound).
  • Break down large goals into smaller steps.
  • Celebrate milestones.

17. Time Management

Effective time management helps you prioritize tasks and reduce stress. Good time management skills have been linked to increased productivity, reduced stress, and improved work-life balance.

Actionable Steps:

  • Identify time-wasting activities.
  • Use time-blocking or the Pomodoro Technique.
  • Learn to say no to commitments that don’t align with your goals.

18. Continuous Learning

Expanding your knowledge and skills contributes to personal growth. Lifelong learning has been associated with increased cognitive function, reduced risk of dementia, and greater life satisfaction.

Actionable Steps:

  • Read books, take online courses, and attend workshops.
  • Find a mentor or join a learning community.
  • Embrace a growth mindset.

19. Overcoming Fear

Facing your fears can lead to personal growth and new opportunities. Overcoming fear builds resilience, confidence, and self-esteem.

Actionable Steps: Identify your fears, challenge negative thoughts, break down overwhelming tasks into smaller steps, and seek support from others.

20. Self-Care

Prioritizing physical and mental well-being is essential for overall happiness. Self-care has been linked to improved mood, reduced stress, and better physical health.

Actionable Steps:

  • Get enough sleep, exercise regularly, and eat a healthy diet.
  • Practice relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation.
  • Spend time in nature.

Remember: Finding yourself is a journey, not a destination. Be patient and kind to yourself, and celebrate your progress.

Overcoming Obstacles: How To Keep The Journey Going

I am passionate about self-discovery and how transformative this path is, but please keep your expectations in line because this process is rarely smooth.

It’s common to encounter roadblocks, setbacks, or moments of doubt. When you start digging inside, you will inevitably find things that are scary or make you feel confused. Especially during these moments, it’s essential to remember that these challenges are a natural part of the process and can even be opportunities for growth.

Here are some strategies to help you navigate obstacles:

Embrace Imperfection & Practice Self-Compassion

Understand that it’s okay to make mistakes or feel lost, everyone experiences setbacks. Treat yourself with kindness and understanding during difficult times.

Seek Support & Reframe Challenges

Reach out to friends, family, or a therapist for support and guidance. Approach obstacles as opportunities to learn and grow.

Take Breaks & Celebrate Small Wins

Stepping back can provide clarity and renewed perspective. At the same time, acknowledge your progress, no matter how small.

Set Realistic Expectations While Visualizing Success

Avoid putting undue pressure on yourself. Progress takes time, and it’s important to celebrate small steps while also imagining overcoming challenges and achieving your goals.

Identify Limiting Beliefs & Learn from Failures

Recognize negative thought patterns that might be hindering your progress. Challenge these beliefs and replace them with positive affirmations. Instead of dwelling on setbacks, analyze what went wrong and use the experience to grow.

Build Resilience & Find a Support Group

Practice coping mechanisms to handle stress and adversity. This could include mindfulness, exercise, or journaling. Connect with others who are on a similar journey. Sharing experiences can provide encouragement and motivation.

Consistency over intensity, always! By staying persistent and focused on your overall well-being, you can overcome any obstacle and continue your journey of self-discovery.
