What Is Self-Care Day?
It’s easy to feel frustrated by thinking that a self-care day is all about bubble baths and face masks, but that’s not exactly it. Well, at least it’s not about just that.
Taking care of yourself is not just about bubble baths and face masks. It’s about taking a pause in the middle of chaos to consciously nurture your physical and mental well-being and invest in what makes you feel good, relaxed, and recharged. Understanding and practicing self-care day habits empowers you to take control of your well-being, enhancing your sense of control and balance in life.
The Importance And Benefits Of a Self-Care Day
Just like a car needs regular maintenance to run smoothly and perform at its best, you need a self-care day to fully unlock its full potential and function at your best.
It’s not just personal experience that attests to the benefits of self-care days, such as improved resilience, productivity, and relationships. Scientific research strongly supports the positive impact of self-care day habits.
Studies have found that a consistent self-care day routine is an investment in your health. The benefits range from less stress to better mood, sleep, and a stronger immune system. Self-care day practices like meditation, exercise, and spending time in nature are well-known in the scientific community for their positive impact on mental and physical health.
How To Plan A Self-Care Day
It’s time to dedicate a whole day to yourself! How exciting! Here are 5 simple steps to plan the best self-care day ever!
Step 1: Choose A Day And Mark It On Your Calendar
Some people can dedicate a whole day to self-care weekly, which is good for them. That’s amazing! But, for most of us, that’s not a possible reality. Don’t let this shy away from committing to a weekly self-care day ritual!
The key is to adapt to what’s possible at this moment in your life. You can dedicate an afternoon or your Friday nights to yourself. You could also do one small thing each week or integrate self-care day into your daily routine.
Step 2: Plan And Prepare In Advance
Treat this moment like a VIP appointment in your calendar! Considering your needs and planned activities, block out a realistic amount of time.
Once you have your time slot, it’s time to plan your activities!
Finding the self-care activities that resonate with you is a highly personal journey. You don’t need to have a bubble bath and do face masks if that’s not your thing! The goal is to pick things that nourish your mind, body, and soul. It’s totally OK (and encouraged by me!) to mix and match activities to create a personalized self-care experience that is perfect for you.
If you have more than one activity planned, you do your best to schedule buffer time between them to avoid feeling rushed. Also, it’s OK if you don’t finish your initial list! Adjust to your go. The goal is to create a relaxing and enjoyable experience, not a rigid itinerary.
I’m about to share a few self-care day activities to include in your self-care moment. You can pick and choose whatever you’d like, but once you have a final draft of your schedule, prepare in advance to get any materials you might need. Snacks, skincare products, essential oils in your favorite scents, books…
Make a mental list of all the things you need and check to ensure you’ll have all of them in hand when the time for your self-care day comes.
Step 3: Disconnect From Technology & Set The Mood
Disconnecting from social media is one of the best ways to start your self-care day! It’s so easy to fall into a comparison spiral when scrolling through feeds, so make sure this will be a moment where your only focus is you and no one else.
You might need your phone or computer to play a playlist or watch a movie on Netflix during your self-care session, and that’s fine. But only use technology for what’s necessary for your plan to go perfectly, and keep social media out of your special moment!Â
After that, set the mood for your self-care moment. Depending on what you will do, first light a candle, play some background music, and change into comfy clothes (or a robe if you are going for a spa day vibe).Â
Step 4: Meditate Or Practice Mindfulness
This is an essential step because it’s all about mental self-care! Take some time in silence to reflect on your thoughts and feelings. A great way to do that is through meditation or breathing exercises. This will help you get grounded and fully present to kick things off.Â
You can also free journal or get some guided journal prompts to help you process emotions, gain clarity, and set intentions for the future.
Adjust the practices to meet your current needs. They are meant to promote self-compassion, emotional self-care, and spiritual self-care.

Step 5: Indulge In Your Favorite Activities
What makes you feel at your happiest? Reading a good book? A relaxing massage? Getting lost in arts and crafts? Spending time outdoors?
Make sure to allocate time in your schedule to fully dedicate to the things that make you smile and bring you joy and relaxation.
Need some ideas to get your creative juices flowing? Here are a few of my favorite activities:
- Declutter and Organize: Dedicate some time to declutter a specific area of your home or workspace.
- Nature Immersion: Go for a long walk in a park, hike in the woods, or sit outside and soak up the fresh air while you listen to your favorite podcast.
- Relaxing Bath: Pamper yourself with a warm bath scented with essential oils or Epsom salts. If you don’t have a bathtub, take a warm and long shower.
- Mind-Body Practice: Engage in yoga, meditation, or gentle stretching to unwind, de-stress and calm your inner self-talk.
- Creative Outlet: Unleash your inner artist by painting, writing, playing music, or engaging in any creative activity you enjoy.
- Culinary Adventure: Cook a healthy and delicious meal you’ve wanted to try or indulge in your favorite meal.
- Reading Retreat: Curl up with a good book in a cozy spot and get lost in a captivating story.
- Beauty Ritual: Take time for a pampering skincare routine or a relaxing face mask.
- Hobby Haven: Immerse yourself in your favorite hobby, such as photography, board games, physical activity, or learning a new language.
- Power Nap: Recharge with a rejuvenating afternoon nap, even for just 20 minutes.
And done! You just treated yourself to a self-care ritual! Congratulations! If possible, schedule your next one already; this will help you get the habit going.Â
