The Best Fiction Books For Self Development

The Midnight Library, by Matt Haig

fiction books for self development The Midnight Library

“We only need to be one person. We only need to feel one existence. We don’t have to do everything in order to be everything, because we are already infinite. While we are alive we always contain a future of multifarious possibility. – The Midnight Library

The Midnight Library The Midnight Library is a must-read in the genre of fiction books for self development. It tells the story of Nora, who is unhappy with her life and has regrets.

She lives more inside her head than outside. Her days are filled with “what ifs,” where she reminisces about her past and choices.

Amidst this melancholic routine, Nora finds herself in a unique space, suspended between life and death, both figuratively and literally. In this mystical intersection of time and space, she stumbles upon a library, a place that will change her life forever.

This fantastic place is filled with books that are actually versions of her life. Each is an entirely different dimension, formed for a choice she made slightly differently somewhere along with life.

These discoveries led Nora to deep reflection on many profound questions: Should she explore the different versions of her life? Is there a perfect life waiting for her? What choice could have led to her ultimate happiness? What does personal success really means?

Why You Might Love The Midnight Library

As someone obsessed with spirituality and metaphysics, I found this book filled with references to both. I found myself delighted and wanting to read it slowly so it would last longer, just like a delicious dessert your grandma made for you on Sunday dinner.

One of the main reasons this novel is also such a deep personal growth journey (I would even say, one of the best self-help books I’ve ever read) is Nora’s own questioning about life choices. How small decisions can create a life-changing impact…

You start making connections and cross-examine your own life, decisions, past, future, and patterns of behaviors.

This book has won the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Fiction, and it’s being adapted into a movie… It’s worth all the hype.

The Vanishing Half, by Brit Bennett

fiction books for self development The Vanishing Half

“She hadn’t realized how long it takes to become somebody else, or how lonely it can believing in a world not meant for you.” – The Vanishing Half

The Vanishing Half is a standout in fiction books for self development, telling the family story of the twins Stella and Desiree Vignes, raised in a small community in the South during the Jim Crow years.

They were inseparable as children but ran away to start a new life and create better opportunities for their future. That’s when things start to get complicated…

Many years later, the sisters who used to be so close live two completely different lives. One works as a waitress in the town she escaped during her teenage years. The other secretly passes for white, living a wealthy lifestyle on the West Coast with her white husband, who suspects nothing.

Even after they lost all contact, were miles away, and living completely different lives, the twins’ fate still seemed entangled.

What will happen when the next generation tries to disrupt all the years of lies, fear, and complacency that have been built?

Why You Might Love The Vanishing Half

This book got me wrapped up around its finger! It covers over three decades of this family’s life, making it one of the best fiction books for self development I’ve read.

I added to our list of of the best books on fiction that are a must-read for personal growth because the author, Brit Bennett, can bring everyone’s perspective into the mix.

As you read and learn, you comprehend that there is no such thing as someone who is a wholly “good” or entirely “bad” person–and that’s one of the life lessons we all should learn at some point.

Everyone is trying their best with the emotional resources that they have available. It makes you understand how fear and the need to feel loved can make you do things that seem unimaginable to others but are your own tool for survival in that minute.

Reading The Vanishing Half helped me become more empathetic to the people in my life, especially my family. The saying “everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about” may be cliche but also true.

The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho

fiction books for self development The Alchemist

“Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second’s encounter with God and with eternity.”The Alchemist

This classic book tells the story of a simple shepherd boy who dreams of a hidden treasure in the pyramids of Egypt. To go after his dream, he needs to leave life as he knows behind it and trusts that he is being guided by good omens and that the Universe is working in his favor.

During this epic journey, he will encounter unbelievable favor, burning passion, true love, and life-threatening challenges.

How far would you go to follow your dreams and become who you were meant to be? This is the central question of this fiction book for self development.

Why You Might Love The Alchemist

Author Paulo Coelho is a fellow Brazilian. I grew up hearing stories about how he is secretly a wizard, and after reading The Alchemist, I understand why.

The writing is as deep and intriguing as a sacred book is written. In the same way, you will find your heart feeling warm and your fears being put to rest as you go through the pages.

As I advanced in the shepherd boy story, I found answers to my longings, fears, and secret questions. It was like a guide on how to pursue your dreams.

That’s why this book is so life-changing and connected to personal growth. It will teach you the essential mindset behind living this brutiful (brutal + beautiful, as Glennon Doyle says) journey of bringing dreams to life while staying true to who you are.

It’s one of those books you keep on the nightstand and revisit often.

The Authenticity Project, by Clare Pooley

fiction books for self development The Authenticity Project

“When we first come here in 1973, two men came to restaurant and say ‘Go back to China and take your filthy foreign food with you.’ I say, ‘You are angry. Anger comes from stomach. Sit. I bring you soup. For free. It will make you feel better.’ They ate my wonton soup. Recipe from my grandmother. They have been customers of restaurant for forty years. Meet force with softness. Recipe for life. Now you understand.” And, strangely, he did.” The Authenticity Project

The Authenticity Project is a standout in the category of fiction books for self development. It introduces readers to Julian, an eccentric artist who feels that people are not honest. So, he decided to do something about it, writing the truth about his own life (flaws and all) in this beautiful green journal and inviting the next person to read it to do the same.

He leaves this journal at a local coffee shop with no idea what whirlwind turn of events this will unlock. The cafe owner, Monica, finds the book and, in an act of courage, decides to write her own truth in it. She then leaves the little notebook in a bar across the street.

Soon enough, more people came across the little book, and it touched and changed their lives. Finding each other in real life with the unfair (and sometimes unrevealed) advantage of already knowing each other’s deepest secrets.

This book will introduce protagonists with wildly different perspectives, ages, walks of life, ethnicities, and challenges, such as a person with a cocaine addiction, an Instagrammer mommy, a dreamy and chill Australian gardener, an uptight business owner, and Julian… the star of the book, in my opinion.

Every chapter is narrated by one of the characters, so you get to see the same situation from entirely different perspectives and learn their real motivations, fears, and points of view.

If this book was a movie, it would definitely be a dramatic comedy.

Why You Might Love The Authenticity Project

As far as personal growth goes and fiction books for self development, this book will make you think about how what someone else lets you see about who they are is rarely the whole story (or the actual story).

People have reasons behind their decisions that sometimes feel irrational but are deeply clouded by self-doubt and anxiety, while also deeply rooted in the need to be loved, seen, and understood.

Some of the (fiction) self improvement books I’ve already talked about here will help you develop more empathy towards the ones around you, so this one is joining the choir.

Wonder, by R.J. Palacio

fiction books for self development Wonder

“The things we do outlast our mortality. The things we do are like monuments that people build to honor heroes after they’ve died. They’re like the pyramids that the Egyptians built to honor the pharaohs. Only instead of being made of stone, they’re made out of the memories people have of you.”Wonder

Wonder is a must-read in the world of fiction books for self development. In this heartwarming story, we learn the tale of August, a lovable, smart, fun, and energetic kid.

So what makes him different from the other kids his age? He was born with a facial difference and has been homeschooled until now.

Now, he is about to start 5th grade in a new school and wants to be treated like the other kids, but his classmates need help having August around. Is it possible to blend in when you were born to stand out?

Why You Might Love Wonder

I absolutely love how much wisdom can be learned from children’s books when you go for it with an open heart. This heartfelt story is packed with enlightenment on empathy, compassion, vulnerability, mental health, and acceptance.

This book will make you feel all the emotions at once: joy, love, anger, sadness, and so much hope.

When discussing personal development, be ready to question your perspective and actions toward different people. Also, ask yourself: What does normal mean, and why can we be so obsessed?

To complement this marvelous reading, I recommend watching the movie, which features incredible actors like Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, and David Diggs (forever Lafayette in my heart). However, I do have to confess that I was heartbroken that one of my favorite parts of the book did not make the cut in the film…

So, when you read the book, imagine how beautiful/cute/adorable it is when Auggie is singing Space Oddity (yep, by David Bowie) with his dad.
