This can be a wonderful opportunity to create a personalized check-in, revitalize your life, and pave the way for a brighter future!

I put together this express guide, a simple life audit template, to help you conduct your personal audit easily, already updated for 2025.

What Is A Life Audit?

A life audit is like a reality check for yourself. It’s not about judging yourself but gaining clarity and making informed decisions that will help you feel better. Think of it like a GPS for your life, always making sure you’re heading in the right direction that aligns with what you value and want.

One of my favorite times to do a life audit is at the end of the year and also in the middle of the year for a mid-year reset. This helps me stay on track and prevents life from taking me too far from my goals.

Buuut sometimes, the idea of reviewing your entire life can feel overwhelming, especially if there are certain areas you’re not proud of or tend to avoid. But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with a simple life audit checklist to help get you started.

Whether you’re feeling stuck in your career, struggling with relationships, or just need a general reset, this life audit can help guide you to a better place.

How To Do A Full Life Audit?

Step 1: Reflect on Your Values and Priorities

Taking stock of your priorities, values, and goals can help you clarify what truly matters to you and steer your life in a direction that feels fulfilling and aligned.

So to start your life audit, begin by reflecting on your core values and what brings you joy.

Consider all areas of your life, including relationships, career, personal development, health, and any other areas that are significant to you.

Take the time to write down the key elements that align with your values and bring you joy. This foundation will serve as your guiding light throughout the life audit process.

Remember that a life audit is not about judgment or criticism. It’s about taking a compassionate and honest look at your life and making adjustments that will help you live more authentically and purposefully. It’s also important to keep in mind that your priorities and values may change over time, so be open to revisiting and adjusting them as needed.

(And if you are already wondering, “OK, but how often should I do a life audit?” Know that the key to this question is here! Every time you start to feel that your priorities and values are beginning to change, it might be a season of slowing down and taking time to make another life audit. Just like I’ve shared before, how I like doing a life audit 2x a year–at the end of the year and around May/June)

Before we go to the second step, here is a gentle reminder: As you go through the life audit process, be gentle with yourself and celebrate your successes along the way. It’s ok to figure out and adjust things as you go.

Step 2: Assess Your Current Situation

It’s time to get practical and thoroughly examine your current circumstances in each area of life.

Instead of answering endless lengthy life audit questions, pick a few aspects of your life to focus on. Here are a few ideas on how to group different categories of your life:

  • Business/Career, Finances, Health, Family & Friends, Romance, Personal Development, Fun & Recreation, Contribution to Society
  • Financial & Career, Mental & Educational, Physical & Health, Social & Cultural, Spiritual & Ethical, Family & Home
  • Career, Financial, Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Family, Social

Once you have identified these areas, it’s time to rate each one between 0-10, with zero being the worst and 10 being the most optimal state.

This step is crucial in understanding where adjustments are needed to align your life with your values and goals.

Start by identifying what’s working well and what needs improvement. Make a list of the things you love about that area and another with the things you are not the biggest fan of.

Take a moment to reflect on patterns or habits that may be contributing to your dissatisfaction or hindering your progress.

This exercise will help you understand the changes you need to make to live a fulfilling life.

Change is not always easy, but it’s necessary for growth and progress. Keep an open mind and be willing to step out of your comfort zone to achieve your desired outcome. You got this!

Step 3: Analyze Your Findings

Now that you’ve identified your core values, goals, and priorities, it’s time to delve deeper into your findings. This step is about making sense of the information you’ve gathered.

Here’s how you can analyze your findings:

  • Identify patterns: Look for recurring themes or patterns in your answers. Are there areas of your life that consistently align with your values? Are there areas where there’s a significant gap?
  • Assess your current situation: How does your lifestyle reflect your values and goals? Are you living in alignment with what truly matters to you?
  • Identify strengths and weaknesses: Based on your analysis, pinpoint your strengths and areas for improvement. This self-awareness is crucial for personal growth in this life audit process!
  • Discover your passions: What activities or pursuits genuinely ignite your passion? How can you incorporate more of these into your life?
  • Uncover limiting beliefs: Are any negative beliefs or assumptions holding you back? Challenge these beliefs and explore alternative perspectives.

By carefully analyzing your findings, you’ll gain valuable insights into your life and create a clear foundation for setting meaningful goals.

This process actually reminds me of one of my favorite quotes, one that I keep close to my heart during seasons of life audits:

“Alignment first, then action.” – Abraham Hicks

Step 4: Create Action Plans

Now that you have your goals set, it’s time to start planning how to achieve them (see this as your own life audit worksheet). Creating detailed action plans will help you stay on track and make progress toward your objectives. 

To start, you’ll need to define specific steps for each of your goals. Think about the resources you’ll need and the potential obstacles you might face, and be realistic about the time and effort required.

I’m about to get very specific with each one of the steps on how to create action plans, and I get this process can be overwhelming. Okay, now that the announcements are out of the way, let’s explore each of the goal-setting aspects a little more!

Getting Clear About Your Resources

When creating your action plan, it’s important to consider the resources that you’ll need to achieve your goals.

Whether it’s time, money, or manpower, make sure you are lining out all that you need to succeed, considering how you can acquire them. Maybe you will need to get some help from others or find cost-effective solutions.

Remember, the more detailed your action plan is, the easier it will be to navigate challenges and stay focused on your objectives.

Preparing For Potential Obstacles

Another important factor to consider is the potential obstacles that you might face along the way.

Be honest with yourself about the challenges you might encounter, and think about how you can overcome them.

This will help you prepare for potential roadblocks and ensure that you are ready to handle anything that comes your way.

For example, one of my current goals is to wake up earlier. Still, one of my potential obstacles is feeling too tired and hitting snooze multiple times. So, I reverse-engineered the process and understood that to hit my 5:30 a.m. wake-up time goal, I need to eat dinner earlier and go to bed around one hour before than I currently do.

This morning was the first time I “tested” this theory of an earlier dinner the night before, resulting in a no-snooze wake-up. I am happy to report that it worked!

Creating Realistic Goals

Finally, be realistic about the time and effort required to achieve your goals. Please don’t underestimate the required work, but don’t overestimate it. Set achievable milestones that will help you track your progress and keep you motivated.

Having a clear roadmap will help you navigate challenges and stay focused on your objectives. By following these steps and creating a detailed action plan, you’ll be well on your way to achieving your goals.

In the next step, I will give you a practical example from my personal life for the “waking up earlier” goal so you can understand this concept in action.

Step 5: Implement Changes Gradually

Change can be challenging. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when you think about all the things you want to improve or achieve.

But it’s important to remember that change is a journey, not a sprint. It’s not about making drastic changes overnight but rather implementing small, gradual changes that are sustainable in the long run.

When you’re ready to make a change in your life, start by focusing on one or two areas at a time. This targeted approach will help you stay motivated and avoid feeling like you’re taking on too much at once.

For example, if you want to improve your health, you could start by incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your diet or taking a short walk every day.

By taking small steps, you’ll be able to adapt to the new dynamics in your life more easily. You’ll also be less likely to feel discouraged or overwhelmed, which can lead to giving up on your goals altogether.

So be patient with yourself, and celebrate your progress along the way. Yes, change is a journey, but it’s a journey worth taking.

Going back to my earlier goal of waking up earlier, when I set to make that change, I was waking up around 8:00 a.m. As an overachiever, it was tempting to jump straight to 5:30 a.m. Still, I knew I would have a low chance of success, which resulted in me feeling discouraged and abandoning the goal.

So I started to make incremental changes, waking up at 7:30, then 7:00, and then 6:00 am. I will eventually reach 5:30, but I have eased my body and senses into it.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither are sustainable lifestyle changes.

Creating small wins toward your big goal is a major hack to keep yourself motivated toward something that has the potential to feel overwhelming if taken all at once.

Step 6: Monitor Your Progress

It’s important to regularly check in on our progress. By doing so, we can celebrate small victories, learn from setbacks, and adjust our plans if necessary.

The key to achieving our goals is to stay flexible and responsive to the evolving nature of life. While it’s important to have a plan in place, it’s equally important to recognize that life doesn’t always go according to plan.

Sometimes, unexpected obstacles or opportunities can arise, and we need to be able to adapt accordingly.

One way to stay on track with our goals is to consider journaling our experiences.

By noting the lessons learned and expressing gratitude for the positive changes, we can gain valuable insights into our own personal growth and development.

So, the next time you find yourself feeling stuck or discouraged, take a moment to reflect on your progress.

Step 7: Cultivate Self-Compassion

Embarking on a life audit can be daunting. It can be a time of reflection, introspection, and self-evaluation, which can bring up a range of emotions.

However, it’s important to remember that this journey is about growth, not perfection. It’s about acknowledging where you are right now and the steps you can take to shape the life you desire.

Throughout this process, it’s essential to be kind to yourself. It’s easy to get caught up in negative self-talk and self-criticism, but self-compassion will be your greatest ally.

Embrace the process, acknowledge your efforts, and learn from the challenges. Celebrate the fact that you are taking conscious steps towards personal growth and development.

Remember that a life audit is not a one-time event. It’s an ongoing process of self-reflection and self-improvement. It’s about taking stock of your life, identifying what’s working and what’s not, and making the necessary changes to live a more fulfilling and purposeful life.

As you navigate this journey, keep in mind that it’s okay to make mistakes and experience setbacks. These are all part of the process, and they provide valuable lessons that can help you grow and evolve.

So, take the time to be patient with yourself, and don’t be afraid to seek support from loved ones or professionals.

In the end, remember that you have the power to shape your life and create the future you desire. So, embrace the journey, be kind to yourself, and celebrate your progress along the way.
