75 Journal Ideas for When You Don’t Know What to Write

You bought the pretty journal. You opened it to the first page. You picked up your favorite pen, and then… nothing. Does this sound familiar?
The blank page just stares at you. You write the date, maybe “Dear diary” (cringe?? or cute??? to be discussed), and close it again. The journal goes back on the nightstand, looking cute and very, very empty.
I get it! I’ve had SO many beautiful journals with three pages filled and the rest blank. For a long time I thought I was just “not a journaling person.” Turns out, I didn’t need more discipline. I needed ideas. Easy, fun, low-pressure ideas for those days when my brain feels like a browser with 107 tabs open.
So here are 75 journal ideas for when you don’t know what to write: lists, trackers, creative pages, prompts and tiny 2-minute ideas for tired days. Pick one, write for five minutes, and close the journal feeling proud. That’s it.
And please remember: there’s no wrong way to keep a journal. Messy handwriting, skipped weeks, half-finished lists? Totally okay. Your journal is for you, not for others to judge.

Why Journal Ideas Work Better Than “Just Write”
“Just write whatever’s on your mind” sounds simple. But when you’re tired, your mind is either empty or SO full that you don’t know where to start. A journal idea gives your thoughts a little direction, and suddenly the words come.
A few things that help:
- Keep it short. Five minutes counts. One sentence counts.
- Keep it at hand. A journal on your nightstand gets used. A journal in a drawer doesn’t.
- Mix it up. Lists one day, a doodle the next, a deep prompt when you have the energy.
- Never miss twice. Skipped a day (or a month)? Just open it and pick an idea. No catching up needed.
If you’re brand new to this, my guide on how to start a gratitude journal is a great first step.

My Favorite Journaling Supplies
You don’t need anything fancy. Any notebook and any pen will do! But if a pretty setup makes you want to open your journal (it does for me!), here are a few favorites:
A dotted journal is perfect for all of these ideas: lists, trackers and doodles all look good on dots.
Color-coding your trackers is SO satisfying. Sorry, not sorry.
For the creative pages, or for the days you have zero words and just want to make something pretty.
How to Make Journaling a Habit (Without the Guilt)
- Attach it to something you already do. Morning coffee, bedtime tea, waiting in the school pickup line.
- Use a tiny “if-then” plan. “If I sit down with my tea, then I’ll write one line.”
- Keep this list handy. Pin it or screenshot it, so you never face a blank page without an idea.
- Try a challenge. My 30-day journaling challenge for self-love gives you one prompt a day, so you don’t have to think.
- Be kind when you skip. Missing a day is part of it. The goal is never to miss twice.
What If I Still Don’t Know What to Write?
Totally normal! Try one of these:
- Describe the room you’re sitting in. It sounds silly, but it warms up your brain.
- Write “I don’t know what to write because…” and keep going. It works every time.
- Copy a quote you love and write one sentence about why.
- Close the journal. Some days your journal is just there to hold space. Come back tomorrow.

Your Journal, Your Rules
Your journal doesn’t have to be deep, pretty or consistent to be worth it. It just has to be yours. Pick one idea from this list tonight, set a timer for 5 minutes, and see what happens. You’ve got this!!
Now tell me in the comments: which journal idea are you trying first? I’d love to know! And pin this list so you never stare at a blank page again.
And if you’d like a guided path, my 21-day plan gives you one small step (and one journal page) a day.
Wishing you all the love,
Isabelle
