Self-doubt can feel like that annoying little voice in your head whispering that you’re not good enough, smart enough, or worthy enough. It can creep in during important moments—like when you’re about to give a presentation at work or trying to decide whether to take that leap of faith into finally starting your own business.

I remember the first time I was invited to speak at an event in the US. With English being my second language, I can recall standing at the edge of the stage, heart racing and palms sweaty, feeling overwhelmed by the fear of flopping.

But then, I took a deep breath and reminded myself that everyone else was rooting for me. And you know what? I nailed it!

If you’ve ever struggled with self-doubt (and let’s be real, who hasn’t?), you’re in the right place. This article will guide you through a practical, week-long journey on how to overcome self-doubt and kick it to the curb. Let’s dive in!

How To Overcome Self-Doubt: A 7-Day Challenge

Day 1: Acknowledge Your Self-Doubt

Understanding Self-Doubt

Self-doubt isn’t just an annoying feeling; it can seriously hold you back. It often manifests as a fear of failure or a belief that you’re not deserving of success.

When I felt overwhelmed by self-doubt, I constantly compared myself to other content creators, convinced that my content wasn’t good enough.
But then I realized that acknowledging those feelings was the first step to overcoming self-doubt.

Journaling Exercise

Start your journey by putting pen to paper. Take some time to write down your doubts and fears. Don’t hold back—let it all out. The more you acknowledge these feelings, the less power they hold over you.

For me, journaling became a safe space where I could vent my frustrations and work through messy emotions. I’d write down the thoughts swirling in my head, and after a few days, I could see patterns. I noticed that my self-doubt often surfaced when I was stepping out of my comfort zone.

Here are some prompts to get you started with your inner-investigating journaling:

Daily Affirmation

When learning how to overcome self-doubt and combat these negative beliefs, create a daily affirmation. This could be something like, “I am capable and deserving of success.”

Repeat it to yourself every morning. This simple practice can shift your mindset and set a positive tone for the day.

Day 2: Identify Triggers

Recognizing Patterns

Self-doubt often has triggers—situations or experiences that make you question yourself. Take a moment to reflect on these triggers. Are they specific environments, like social settings or challenging tasks?

For instance, I’ve found that I tend to doubt myself in networking events. I would often think, “What do I have to offer?” But then I realized that everyone there was just trying to make connections, just like me!

Reflection Exercise

As you reflect, jot down your triggers. Understanding these patterns can help you prepare for them. Once you know what triggers your self-doubt, you can develop strategies to combat those feelings when they arise.

Visualization Technique

To help you manage these triggers, practice visualization (it’s one of my favorite secrets when sharing how to overcome self-doubt!).

Picture yourself in a situation that typically makes you feel self-doubt. Now, imagine yourself handling it with confidence and grace. This technique can rewire your brain to respond differently to those situations in real life.

Day 3: Challenge Negative Thoughts

Cognitive Restructuring

Now that you’ve identified your triggers, it’s time to challenge those negative thoughts. Cognitive restructuring involves reframing your thoughts from negative to positive. For instance, if you think, “I’ll never be successful,” flip that to, “I am on my journey to success, and every step counts.”

I often feel like I’m not doing enough to reach my goals, even though I am! When I realized this was becoming a recurring problem, I started keeping a detailed spreadsheet with daily task lists, monthly business growth figures, and logged work hours.

Whenever self-doubt crept in, I would refer to the spreadsheet to remind myself that I was actually doing more than enough. Seeing all the evidence of my hard work has been helping me to challenge that negative thought with the truth.

Practical Exercise

Here’s a quick exercise: List three negative thoughts you commonly have.

Then, for each one, write a positive counter-statement. Keep this list handy, and when self-doubt creeps in, refer to it.

Daily Check-In

Make it a habit to check in with yourself throughout the day. Are you falling back into negative thought patterns? If so, pause and reframe those thoughts. Remember, you’re in control of your narrative.

Day 4: Set Realistic Goals

SMART Goals Framework

Setting goals can help you regain control and build confidence. Use the SMART framework to create goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. I already wrote an in-depth guide on how to do this, so if you are interested in this goal-setting method, I highly recommend checking it out here.

When I set out to grow my blog, I started with a SMART goal: “I will publish one new post each week for the next three months.” This gave me a clear target and made it feel manageable.

Goal-Setting Exercise

Spend some time crafting one short-term goal and one long-term goal. Write them down and break them into actionable steps. This will give you a roadmap to follow, making it easier to stay focused and motivated.

Celebrating Small Wins

As you make progress, celebrate your small wins! Recognizing your achievements—no matter how small—can boost your confidence and keep self-doubt at bay.

I started celebrating my milestones with a simple treat—maybe a fancy coffee or trying a fun new recipe for dinner (yes, spending extra hours in the kitchen feels rewarding to me. I know it’s weird for most people, but what can I do? Cooking makes me happy!).

Each celebration reminded me that I was making progress!

Day 5: Surround Yourself with Positivity

The Power of Community

Surrounding yourself with supportive and positive people can make a huge difference in overcoming self-doubt. Seek out friends or mentors who uplift and encourage you.

I used to be so afraid of sharing my business-building struggles and fears with others and having them see me as weak. But after investing in a few solid relationships with other women who are also business owners, I started feeling safe enough to open up. And let me tell you, it was a game-changer!

Being honest about my experiences and hearing other women share their experiences made me realize I wasn’t alone in my self-doubt.

Curating Your Environment

Pay attention to your surroundings. This includes your social media feeds. Unfollow accounts that make you feel inadequate and follow those that inspire and uplift you.

When I cleaned up my Instagram feed, I started following accounts that focused on empowerment and personal growth (and also made sure none of the creators behind those accounts threw me into a comparison loop every time I saw their posts!). This shift made a noticeable difference in my mindset!

Engagement Activity

Consider joining a community—be it online or offline—that aligns with your personal growth goals. Engaging with like-minded individuals can provide encouragement and accountability.

Day 6: Practice Self-Compassion

Understanding Self-Compassion

Self-compassion is about treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer a friend. It’s essential in overcoming self-doubt.

I remember a time when I was overly critical of myself after a failed project. A friend reminded me, “You would never talk to me like that! So why are you talking like that to yourself?” That really hit home.

Self-Compassion Exercises

To practice self-compassion, try these techniques:

  • Self-Kindness: When you feel self-doubt, speak to yourself kindly. Instead of “I can’t believe I messed up,” say, “It’s okay; I’m learning.”
  • Mindfulness: Acknowledge your feelings without judgment. Recognize that self-doubt is a part of being human.

Daily Self-Care Ritual

Incorporate a self-care activity into your daily routine. This could be anything from a warm bath to a short walk in nature. Taking time for yourself is a vital part of fostering self-compassion.

Here are some of my favorite self-care ideas to get you started:

Day 7: Reflect and Reassess

Reviewing the Week

At the end of the week, take a moment to reflect on your journey. What worked well? What challenges did you face? Acknowledging your progress can empower you to keep moving forward.

Creating an Action Plan

Based on your reflections, create an action plan for maintaining the positive changes you’ve made. Consider setting new goals or continuing practices that helped you feel more confident.

Long-term Strategies
