What Is a Self-Care Routine?
Self-care routines are all about filling your cup before pouring it into others. It’s that intentional time you set aside to prioritize your mental health and your physical and emotional well-being.
It’s not selfish; it’s essential for living a fulfilling life (and for being your best self in your relationships as well!).
Think of it as refueling your car. If you don’t regularly fill the tank, your car will eventually break down. The same goes for you. A consistent self-care routine is the fuel that keeps you going, helps you manage stress, and boosts your overall happiness, which can help avoid burnout, low energy levels, negative self-talk, and even mental health issues.
Before we discuss different types of self-care routines in-depth, it is important to remember that self-care looks different for everyone. What makes one person feel re-energized might not work for another, and that’s completely okay!
The key is to find activities that truly nourish your soul and increase your life satisfaction!
Why Is a Self-Care Routine Important?
Most of us need to start shifting the way we see self-care routines. It’s not a luxury but a necessity.
When you prioritize your well-being, you’re investing in yourself, and it benefits different areas of your life. Here are just some of the benefits of regular self-care routine:
- Reduce stress and anxiety: Taking time for yourself helps you unwind and recharge.
- Boost your mood: Engaging in activities you enjoy can increase feelings of happiness and contentment (soon I’m going to share a few resources with you that specifically talk about emotional self-care)
- Improve physical health: Self-care practices based on physical activities like exercise, healthy eating, and sleep can enhance your overall well-being.
- Increase productivity: A well-rested and rejuvenated mind is better equipped to handle challenges.
- Strengthen relationships: By taking care of yourself, you’re better able to show up fully for others and even set boundaries that work for both parties.
How To Create A Self Care Routine
Now that we have covered what self-care routines are and why they’re essential, it’s time to put all that knowledge into action! Here are six simple steps on the self-care routine checklist to create a practice that works for you:
Step 1: Figure Out What Lights Your Soul on Fire
Before anything else, we need to understand what self-care routine means for you. The beauty of self-care is that it’s not one-size-fits-all when looking for the best self-care routine for women (or anyone, for that matter!). It’s as unique as you are!
So, start by making a list of things that rejuvenate you. Do you enjoy yoga, reading, puzzles, writing in a gratitude journal, dancing, or maybe painting? Or maybe it’s something like taking a hot bath or meditating?
Take some time to reflect and list everything down!
Step 2: Keep It Simple!
After you’ve got a list, it’s time to narrow it down. Yes, I know you want to conquer the world, but let’s start small with some short-term wins, shall we? Try picking 1-3 activities to start.
Remember, we are creating a self-care routine, not a self-care marathon! Less is more, especially as you are starting.
Step 3: Schedule, Schedule, Schedule
Time to bring out your planner (or Google Calendar, if that’s more your thing)!
Schedule your chosen activities, just like you would for any other important appointment.
Consistency is key in a self-care routine, so schedule regular time for yourself. (If you have been having difficulty finding time and creating a schedule that doesn’t feel overwhelming, I highly recommend grabbing a copy of Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals by Oliver Burkeman—this book has some life-changing concepts and tools!)
Step 4: Make It Non-Negotiable
If you’re like me, you’re an expert at canceling on yourself.
But guess what? Your self-care routine is now a date with yourself that is non-negotiable.
Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Your self-care is as important as any other task (plus, it will help you build better emotional health and boost self-worth and self-esteem, making it much easier to set boundaries and leave that guilty feeling for prioritizing yourself behind).
So, treat it that way.
Step 5: Adjust and Repeat
Rome wasn’t built in a day, my dear, and neither is a perfect self-care routine!
So, give yourself grace, adjust when necessary, and remember that consistency always beats intensity.
Step 6: Find a Self Care Routine That Works For You
Raise your hand if you’ve spent way more hours than needed scrolling through social media to find *that* perfect self-care routine checklist.
Yep, there’s no shame here. We’ve all been there!
But here is the thing… As I’ve shared before, there is no such thing as a “one size fits all” self-care checklist.
Sure, we can grab inspiration from all over. Still, magic happens when we combine it to create something that resonates with our emotions and answers our longings in this season of life.
Beyond that, when creating a self-care routine, it’s important to follow this simple rule of three to ensure that whatever approach you take is balanced and will cover areas beyond skincare routines.
This rule of three is one of my favorite ” measures of effectiveness” for personal growth tools because it ensures that whatever approach you take is balanced and will take care of you as a whole, beyond just skincare routines (which is so easy to do when talking about self-care!).
This rule ensures that you include your body, soul, and spirit in any routine tailored to long-term success (I discuss this rule more in-depth in a blog post here).
Feel free to mix and match them as you please, but include at least one activity for each!
- Make sure to choose something that will care for your body: your contact with the outside world, the more physical part of yourself.
- Make sure to choose something that will care for your soul: your contact with your inner word, the more emotion-driven part of yourself.
- Make sure to choose something that will take care of your spirit: your contact with something bigger than yourself, the more immaterial part of yourself.
Now that you know the secret behind a successful self-care routine, here are some resources and ideas to help you create one that is perfect for you!
What Are Some Self-Care Ideas?
